One of my favorite activities is to sink into a steaming bubble bath with a good book. Reading takes me to places far away, visiting with people of different lands, cultures and times. What better time to explore The Power of Reading than now, while most of us are sheltering in place during this COVID19 pandemic. There’s so much bad news being shared these days; I thought I’d take some time and bring some uplifting messages and ideas to help us get through these tough times in the WELL Women Series.

My niece, Kiandria Cowart, is also a passionate reader. She’s pictured above nestled into her favorite chair, reading! As a young child in grade school, my sister would take her to the library and Kiandria would pick out her books to read. After she read those, her mom would have her pick out books the next grade level up. That continued throughout her young life. I’ve always known Kiandria to be an avid reader. Kiandria is now a sophomore at California University of Pennsylvania; she is a scholar and athlete. Kiandria joined me on this week’s WELL Women Series Vlog to talk about her passion for reading.

My eldest niece, Kristen, moderated our conversation!

As promised, I’ve listed below some of the books (and more) that we mentioned in our conversation:

Kristen asked about The Blessings Series by Beverly Jenkins

Here’s Book 1 of the Series. I am now on Book 10. I love this series!

Description from Amazon: On Bernadine Brown’s fifty-second birthday she received an unexpected gift—she caught her husband, Leo, cheating with his secretary. She was hurt—angry, too—but she didn’t cry woe is me. Nope, she hired herself a top-notch lawyer and ended up with a cool $275 million. Having been raised in the church, she knew that when much is given much is expected, so she asked God to send her a purpose.

The purpose turned out to be a town: Henry Adams, Kansas, one of the last surviving townships founded by freed slaves after the Civil War. The failing town had put itself up for sale on the Internet, so Bernadine bought it.

      1. Thank you. Enjoyed the VBlog & Blog. I especially appreciated the generational conversations. Too Heavy a Yoke is one of my favorite books. I’m an avid reader too & will check out several of the books recommended by you & your niece. Thanks again. Peace & Blessings.
